The Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross will close two disaster shelters it opened in response to the the strong winter storm that struck the state New Year's Day.
The shelters, at the Tillamook County Fairgrounds in Tillamook County and at the Damascus Community Church in Damascus, Clackamas County, will close by 12 noon today. Two local residents stayed at the Tillamook shelter overnight; the Damascus shelter had 11 overnight residents.
The Chapter provided cots, blankets and other material support for two shelters operated by the city of Vernonia in Columbia County. It had pre-positioned these supplies in the event that the roads were closed by the heavy weather.
The Chapter also provided cots and blankets for a privately-operated shelter at the Chehalem Care Center in Newberg, Yamhill County.
Red Cross disaster repsonders remain ready to meet the immediate emergency needs of Oregonians affected by the storm.
All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. To support the ongoing work of the Oregon Trail Chapter, visit www.oregonredcross.org/donate.

In Oregon, the American Red Cross shelters, feeds and counsels victims of disaster every 12 hours; provides 97 percent of Oregon's blood supply; teaches thousands of Oregonians lifesaving skills; provides transportation to seniors and the disabled; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization – not a government agency – and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its humanitarian mission.
