The flooding in the Western states has been declared a national disaster by the American Red Cross. If local volunteer and financial resources become insufficient to meet the needs of this relief effort, the National American Red Cross stands ready to assist.

To date, the Red Cross has sheltered 38 flood-affected residents. Additionally, over 70 Red Cross volunteers have served over 400 meals and nearly 300 smaller food items.

The Tillamook shelter, located at the Tillamook Fairgrounds, will remain open at least through this weekend as additional households may be affected by high winds and rain. Four Red Cross mobile outreach teams are traveling throughout Tillamook County today. These teams are prepared to provide emergency assistance to families, medical services, disaster mental health services, water, snacks and other basic items.

The Red Cross sent two mobile outreach teams to the Hoodland area in Clackamas County this morning. The Red Cross is working closely with Clackamas County government officials to formulate a potential evacuation plan for use if needed due to the forecasted incoming heavy storms.

Those seeking assistance should call the Oregon Trail Chapter’s Emergency Assistance line at 1-800-991-9515.

This is a substantial relief effort. Current Red Cross budget estimates put the expected cost over $125,000. You can help the victims of thousands of disasters like this across the country each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to victims of disaster.  The American Red Cross honors donor intent. If you wish to designate your donation to Oregon Flood Relief you may do so.

Trained Red Cross disaster response volunteers also stand ready for any more weather-related incidents and other local disasters like home fires in the Oregon Trail Chapter’s seven-county service area.

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Local Red Cross volunteers respond to residential fires and other disasters every 40 hours on average. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from Oregonians. Financial gifts help provide shelter, food, clothing, counseling and other immediate assistance to those in need. Call (503) 284-1234 or visit www.redcross-pdx.org
