November 9, 2006
So far over 65 volunteers have been mobilized throughout the state to provide emergency assistance such as shelter, hot meals, water, medical care, disaster mental health counseling, clean up kits, toiletries, comfort items such as stuffed animals or crayons for children, and referrals to resources for ongoing needs.

In Tillamook, the demand for feeding is rising as additional impacted families are parking their trailers in the parking lot outside of the shelter. The shelter will remain open at least through tonight.

Mobile Red Cross units will be traveling throughout Tillamook and Clackamas counties tomorrow offering water, food, and services to residents who have not sought shelter but are still in need of assistance. Those seeking assistance can call our Emergency Assistance line at 1-800-991-9515.

A preliminary disaster assessment estimates that over 150 homes have been impacted in Tillamook and Clackamas counties. Red Cross volunteer nurses, mental health professionals, and disaster caseworkers will help those affected to recover from this disaster in the days and weeks to come.

This is a significant statewide relief effort. Initial estimates put the expected cost near $80,000. Trained Red Cross disaster response volunteers are on standby for other potential flood-related incidents and home fires in the Oregon Trail Chapter’s seven-county service area.

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disaster and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Local Red Cross volunteers respond to residential fires and other disasters every 40 hours on average. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from Oregonians. Financial gifts help provide shelter, food, clothing, counseling and other immediate assistance to those in need. Call (503) 284-1234 or visit www.redcross-pdx.org
