Red Cross

March 1, 2006
Looking back on 2005, we cannot help but think about the huge disasters that played out before our eyes in the media. The coverage regarding the tsunami halfway around the world and the devastating hurricane this season galvanized communities into action. But right here in this our own community, the disasters your Red Cross responded to were no less devastating for those affected by them.

During 2005, the chapter Oregon Trail Chapter trained 28,028 adults in first aid and CPR. With our fast track program in September, almost 1900 new volunteers were trained for disaster response. We reached 872 members of military families with emergency communication; we responded to 191house fires that left families with little but the clothes on their backs; and that's just in one year.

The volunteers and staff of the Oregon Trail Chapter give a tremendous amount of time, energy, and expertise in helping our neighbors – both here at home and across the country. Some of them may wonder what their lives would be like if they weren't involved in the Red Cross. Perhaps they would have more time to spend with loved ones or to devote to a favorite hobby or pastime. But how can those things be weighed against the many people who depend on the Red Cross for help? Executive Director of the Oregon Trail Chapter, my role overseeing the Chapter is a pretty big job. But by being so intimately involved with the day to day operations, I've come to better appreciate our staff and many volunteers for the sacrifices they make to help their neighbors here in our seven -county service area. During this the month of March, please take some time to think about what life in our community would be like without the Red Cross.

I thank each and every one of you who have in some way helped the Red Cross keep our doors open to those in need. Whether you are a dedicated volunteer, have taken a class or used our Armed Forces Emergency Services Programs, your support has shown us that you not only appreciate what we do, but you need us.
