If your dog or cat suddenly stopped breathing or broke a bone, would you know what to do? Get informed by signing up for an American Red Cross pet first aid class on Sunday, June 8 at the Oregon Humane Society, 1067 NE Columbia Blvd.

While pet first aid classes are typically offered at the Oregon Trail Chapter’s northeast Portland headquarters, this is the first time that the furry mannequins have ventured “off-leash” to another location.

"By partnering with the Oregon Humane Society, we hope to reach more pet owners, particularly those who have just adopted and want a jump start on how best to care for their new family member,” said Stephanie Morgan, health and safety director for the Oregon Trail Chapter.

Classes offered on June 8 include both Cat First Aid (11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) and Dog First Aid (2 to 4:30 p.m.). Both courses will explain how to perform rescue breathing, treat shock, respond to choking, stop bleeding, care for a suspected fracture and handle other sudden illnesses including poisoning. They also will teach attendees how to include pets in a family emergency preparedness plan.

Red Cross pet first aid courses were developed by a skilled team of animal, health and emergency preparedness experts. “These classes keep pets healthy by helping owners recognize and respond to a variety of health issues and life-threatening emergencies,” said Morgan. “This is one quick and easy way for every member of the family to learn how to care for their pet.”

To sign up for a Red Cross pet first aid class at the Oregon Humane Society, call 503-284-1234 or visit www.redcross-pdx.org. The cost to attend each class is $40. People are welcome; pets should remain at home.
