This morning at approximately 2:30 a.m., the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to a multi-family apartment fire at 17700 NW Cornell Road in Beaverton. The apartment fire affected 18 units. Here are some basic details about the Red Cross response:

  • A mobile kitchen was deployed to provide food to affected residents.
  • A shelter is now open at Oak Hills Christian Church, 2800 NW 153rd Ave. in Beaverton. Currently, the shelter has no residents. Two families have indicated they will stay with family and friends.
  • In order to best accommodate the schedules of working families, the Red Cross will operate a service center from 2 to 8 p.m. at Oak Hills Christian Church, 2800 NW 153rd Ave. At the center, residents can meet one-on-one with caseworkers to discuss their immediate disaster-caused needs. The Red Cross may be able to help residents with the means to pay for what they need most: groceries, clothing and essential household items. Assistance is based on each individual family's needs.
  • Birch Pointe Apartment management has been able to place two families in vacant units, but does not have any other available units.
  • Apartment management believes that the majority of the residents do not have insurance.

The Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross shelters, feeds and counsels victims of disaster every 36 hours; provides 97 percent of Oregon's blood supply; teaches thousands of Oregonians lifesaving skills; provides transportation to seniors and the disabled; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization – not a government agency – and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its humanitarian mission.
