While the American Red Cross is always ready to provide food, clothing and emotional support for those affected by disasters, the organization generally does not take on the role of moving company.
After the residents of Beaverton's Birch Pointe Apartments were impacted by last Friday's fire, they banded together to make a special request of the Oregon Trail Chapter – could the Red Cross help pack and move their belongings before the mandatory move-out date of Friday, June 20?
"Thinking quickly, we enlisted the help of our partners," said Eric Corliss, the chapter's emergency services director. "By issuing an official Red Cross request, we've been able to get the Salvation Army and many other volunteer organizations to step up and get these Oregonians in new living arrangements by tomorrow afternoon's deadline."
The Oregon Trail Chapter and several partner groups will be on scene at the Birch Pointe Apartments, 17525 NW Cornell Road, on Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The chapter will be providing food and beverages for residents as well as all of the helpers.
The Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross shelters, feeds and counsels victims of disaster every 36 hours; provides 97 percent of Oregon's blood supply; teaches thousands of Oregonians lifesaving skills; provides transportation to seniors and the disabled; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization – not a government agency – and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its humanitarian mission.
