PORTLAND, Ore. – Sharetta Butcher, a Portland native with 25 years of social services expertise, has recently been named volunteer resources director at the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross.

In this newly-created position, Butcher will focus on expanding the Red Cross volunteer workforce and creating resources to support them. Her role includes developing teams to help recruit, train, place and manage Red Cross volunteers; implementing new volunteer policies and procedures; and engaging with community and partner organizations.

Butcher previously worked as a volunteer coordinator and analyst for Oregon's Department of Human Services, where she supervised more than 300 volunteers; conducted trainings and orientations; and developed procedure manuals and other resources. Prior to her work with the State of Oregon, Butcher spent time as a manager for the Salvation Army and a community liaison for the Housing Authority of Portland.

"Aside from her passion for non-profits, Sharetta has a positive attitude and a proven ability to work with a wide range of people," said Maree Wacker, CEO for the Oregon Trail Chapter. "We were determined to hire an outstanding, creative person to serve in this critical role and I'm pleased to say that this is definitely what we've accomplished."

In Oregon, the American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disaster an average of 10 times a week; supplies more than 90 percent of Oregon's blood; teaches thousands of Oregonians lifesaving skills; offers transportation to seniors and the disabled; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization – not a government agency – and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
