PORTLAND, Ore. – With exceptional leadership from Portland's Fern Schlesinger, the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross has received the "Outstanding Chapter Award for 2009" from the Holocaust and War Victims Tracing Center. The award will be presented on Sunday, October 25 in Baltimore, Maryland.

The honor stems from the work of Ms. Schlesinger and Red Cross volunteer Donna Winkler, who coordinated a visit to the Cedar Sinai Park senior and assisted living facilities that resulted in more than 40 new tracing requests. Read more about the award.

The Red Cross' partnership with Portland's Jewish community extends well beyond this award. On Sunday, Nov. 1 from 1-4:30 p.m. at Congregation Shaarie Torah, 920 NW 25th Ave., the Red Cross will hold a class designed to educate the community about international and Holocaust tracing services as well as how to become a disaster volunteer.

Shaarie Torah is already designated as an emergency shelter for disasters, as is Congregation Neveh Shalom. The public is welcome to attend this event. To register, please contact Michael Imlah at 503-226-6131 or stdir@shaarietorah.org.

###

In Oregon, the American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disaster an average of 10 times a week; supplies more than 90 percent of Oregon's blood; teaches thousands of Oregonians lifesaving skills; offers transportation to seniors and the disabled; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization – not a government agency – and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, please visit
