PORTLAND, Ore. – For many seniors, no longer being able to drive to the grocery store or
medical appointments can feel like a devastating loss of independence. Fortunately, the
American Red Cross can help – offering no-cost transportation for shopping, medical,
nutritional and personal needs.
In King City, volunteers for this critical Red Cross service are in short supply. Transportation
is typically provided by a group of volunteer drivers who offer clients friendly conversation
and a helping hand.
“The Red Cross is committed to saving lives, and being able to help Oregonians get to
medical appointments and purchase food can truly be life-sustaining,” said Debbie Waalkes,
transportation manager for the Oregon Trail Chapter. “This service is more than just taking
passengers from point A to point B, it’s about getting people out to socialize and making sure
they’re doing well.”
Depending on availability, drivers generally volunteer once a week for a half or full day shift.
No CDL license is required. For more information, those interested in driving are urged to
contact Volunteer Services at 503-528-5624.

In Oregon, the American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disaster an average of 10 times a week; supplies more than 90 percent of Oregon's blood; teaches thousands of Oregonians lifesaving skills; offers transportation to seniors and the disabled; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization – not a government agency – and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
