Customers can purchase disaster supplies, donate for local relief

Starting Sept. 11, Oregonians will be able to pick up supplies for an emergency kit and make a donation for local disaster relief at their nearest Fred Meyer store.

In honor of National Preparedness Month, the Oregon Red Cross and all Oregon Fred Meyer stores are working together to get the state prepared for disasters. Upon entering a Fred Meyer store, customers can pick up a basic list of items to start building an emergency kit. Shelf talkers will then point shoppers towards key supplies. Additionally, customers can "buy a virtual blanket," making a $4 donation towards local disaster relief.

"From fires to floods and winter weather, the Red Cross is there when our communities are affected by disaster. This partnership allows Oregonians to be there as well," said Melinda Merrill, Director of Public Affairs for Fred Meyer. "Buying a virtual blanket provides a gift of comfort and hope, and helps the Red Cross help others during this busy season."

Donation cards will be available in stores from Sept. 11 through Oct. 2, with Red Cross volunteers on hand to greet customers every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

In Oregon, the American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disaster an average of 10 times a week; supplies more than 90 percent of Oregon's blood; teaches thousands of Oregonians lifesaving skills; offers transportation to seniors and people with disabilities; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization – not a government agency – and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
